Ron Roman biography

Ron’s adventurous nature surfaced early, and at age thirteen, he paused long enough to pick up a Kodak Brownie camera as he headed out the door to explore areas beyond his neighborhood. Years later, his creative side steered him to the School of Visual Arts in New York City where he earned a BFA in Graphic Design. Exploring as an adult meant that Ron went backpacking every weekend. When he had traversed most of the trails just beyond the reaches of his “neighborhood,” he decided to make a serious commitment to hiking the iconic Appalachian Trail.

Since adventure and art have always gone hand in hand for Ron, he took his camera with him on the six-month hike in 1987. Artistically it was quite a departure from the abstract photographs he had been shooting. While the scenery was unparalleled, he often had to visit a spot several times before the various elements of light, vapor, color and movement Asheville nc photographer Ron Romanconverged. Ultimately his patience and persistence were rewarded with ethereal images which illustrate the depth and mystery of the pristine landscape along the Appalachian Trail. In 2010 Ron captured a stunning view along the AT which was featured on the cover of the 2012 book The Appalachian Trail: Celebrating America’s Hiking Trail (image available as a limited edition print here).

Adventure has called and Ron has answered by traveling to several foreign countries, almost all 50 of the United States and many of the American national parks. He has hiked the length of the John Muir Trail from Yosemite to Mount Whitney, spent a month backpacking the wilds of Denali National Park, and explored Italy’s dramatic Dolomite Mountains. Also an avid cyclist, Ron has biked several parkways including the Blue Ridge, Natchez Trace, and Icefields. He toured the West Coast on a biking trip from Seattle to San Francisco and the East Coast on a subsequent ride from St. Augustine, Florida to Washington D.C. Ron Roman possesses a fierce dedication to a life of art and adventure which has fueled his incessant desire to explore the world, establish an intimate connection with a place, and share those visions with others.

Ron has been published in numerous publications including: National Geographic Adventure, Outside, Backpacker, Delta Sky and the Discovery Channel Guidebook Series. In September of 2012, his image was used as the cover of The Appalachian Trail, Celebrating America’s Hiking Trail.
